The sirens could be heard as people stood around the crash site whispering.
“She’s just a young girl, so reckless, what a shame.” They would whisper watching in awe as the ambulance arrived. The young girl being rescued from the car, before she was put on a stretcher, and on her way to the emergency room. The crowd dissipating as the police arrived. Another young girl watched in sorrow as the girl was rushed through the emergency room.
“Please don’t die.” She whispered, the crowd soon walking past her as she disappeared without a trace. The same young girl that had been in the accident was on a hospital bed groaning as she realized she was alive. She ran her hands a long the white cover that was hiding the rest of her body; she began to open her eyes, trying to focus when all she saw was a blur.
“I feel like I got hit by a truck.” She groaned.
“No, just a car.” A girl said, causing the teenage girl on the bed to jump slightly as she winced in pain at the slight movement.
“Who are you?” she asked rudely.
“I’m Melody.” The other teenage girl had said as a nurse walked in.
“I see your finally awake Emily.” They said, Emily nodded not knowing how to answer or if she was suppose to answer at that. It seemed as if the nurse didn’t see Melody and Emily paled slightly when the nurse walked right through her, although she didn’t say anything. She waited for the nurse to leave before panicking.
“W-who are you?” She stuttered out pushing herself against the bed. Thinking it a way to escape. Melody giggled,
“I already told you my name. I’m your familiar. I’m here to help.” Melody said as she began to walk towards Emily. The girl on the bed just starred at her horror struck.
“You’re a ghost.” She whispered terrified. Melody smiled her hand reaching out to touch Emily’s.
“I am not a ghost,” her hand touched Emily’s. “See?” she said. Emily felt the hand touch hers and her eyes widened in realization.
“You’re solid.” She said amazed.
“I’m human, to you.” Melody said Emily looked at her for a moment.
“Why are you here?” She asked her voice shaking slightly.
“I want to help you,” Melody said, “I’ve been through this before,” her hand waved through the air in front of her. Emily’s eyes widening as the air in front of her seemed to form a film of Melody’s past, “and I don’t want to see it happen to someone like me again. There’s so much to live for, but like diamond in the rough you have to find it.” Melody said as her features fell, her head turning away sadly. Emily also turned away.
“I don’t need anyone’s help.” She said coldly her hand tightening around the sheets she held.
“But I want to help!” Melody exclaimed flinching when Emily’s gaze snapped towards her and she began to yell.
“I don’t want your help. I don’t want anybody’s help!” She yelled, as she seemed to be towering over the young girl who seemed to be cowering in fear, her eyes tearing. Emily looked away stubbornly even though the one she was really angry with was herself. She heard a shifting and looked up expecting Melody to be gone. She stared in surprise when she was still there sitting in a chair.
“Why are you still here?” Emily asked forcing the girl to leave even though inside she knew she wanted her to stay.
The girl shrugged her shoulders silently as Emily slumped against her bed her eyes closing as sleep seemed to claim her.
Emily awoke the next the next morning to a smiling face.
“Ms. Emily you’re released to day.” The doctor said Emily nodded pulling the covers back to stand. The ground felt weird to her as she stood, her feet on solid ground. She grabbed the pair of clothes she had been wearing before she had woken up in the hospital. Once dressed she signed multiple papers for her release, when she was finally released she sighed heavily.
Walking down the street with a bag of her belongings. She kicked a rock she saw on the ground sighing again.
“It was just a dream.” Emily whispered. She almost jumped when someone spoke from behind her.
“What was a dream?” Melody asked slightly scaring Emily.
“I thought you left.” Emily shot coldly.
“I came back.” Melody said happily as they continued to 3alk.
“Why are you so bent on helping me?” Emily said, Melody merely shrugged her shoulders.
“That’s what friends are for.” She said simple.
“Since when are we friends.”
“Since now.” she cheered, the other girl rolled her eyes at the answer.
“Where are we going?” Melody asked after the eerie silence. Again Emily shrugged.
“Like I know.” She said, Melody’s facial features becoming quizzical. She followed Emily anyway as they seemed to be walking in all directions.
“Why did you crash that car Emily?” Melody asked suddenly serious as she caught the other girl’s attention, before Emily turned her gaze away from the harsh one she was receiving.
“Because it’s not worth it.” She said simply.
“How is life not worth it Emily? How are friends and family not worth it?” How is life not worth it when you have that?” She asked pleadingly. There was silence and Melody almost continued to badger the girl before Emily cut her off.
“I don’t have any of that.” She spat venomously as her gaze was directed forward, ignoring Melody the best she could. The girl behind her became sad as the silence ensued. Emily’s strides began to speed up as she tried to escape Melody. She didn’t need her help.
“You can’t run forever. You realize that, right? I’ll just follow you.” Melody said as she began to run after Emily.
“Shut up!!” Emily screamed the pitch making it barely understandable. “I don’t need your help! I’ve told you. I’ll stay how I am. Leave me be!” She yelled as she continued to run. Tears falling behind her as she ignored her surroundings only focusing on getting away from Melody. The girl behind her stopped as she watched Emily run.
“I’ll be back Emily. No one deserves to go through this after what you’ve been through, even though I already have.” Melody spoke into the empty streets as she felt tears rain down from the sky. As she too disappeared from site.
Emily continued to run even as the rain that hit her felt piercing to the touch. She wiped at her eyes before changing her direction and slowing to a walk as she entered a dark alley the smell making her face scrunch in disgust.
She leaned against a wall. A sick squishy noise heard as she slid down it. She wiped at her eyes again as the burned, the tears long gone. Her head falling into her hands as she heaved a sigh, her breathing the only thing heard in the small face. She allowed the silence to sink in. A sick feeling in her stomach as it seemed to twist. This isn’t what she wanted.
Emily jumped slightly as a gunshot went off, and a man came barreling around the corner, entering the alleyway. She tried to stand and run as five more men followed the first; gun shots ringing through the air as the gun barrels smoked slightly in the cold air. Emily stood in shock as she felt the pain pulse through her leg. Before she was pushed out of the way as gunshots continued to ricochet off the walls. She watched in awe as Melody appeared clearly in her vision, as everything else was a blur. Her hand went down to cradle the wound as she rested against the cold ground, eyes closing.
“Sleep Emily.” Melody whispered as said girl drifted into a painless sleep as her body began to recover. Melody smiled slightly as she heard sirens; the second time since she had first seen the girl. Emily as if by déjà vu was put in the ambulance and rushed again to the hospital. The medics tending to her wound as her world remained silent. Melody awaited Emily’s entrance at the hospital following the girl’s trail as frantic doctors and nurses walked through her.
“Melody?” Emily whispered as she felt the bright light burn against her closed eyes. Emily heard shifting as Melody answered.
“Yea Em?” She said slightly scared.
“Thank you for saving me.” The girl whispered and before she could even open her eyes to welcome the girl. She had a lap full of Melody, who was hugging her waist tightly.
“Why do you keep trying to die?” she asked as tears reined free over her face. Emily looked partly shocked at the other girl’s audacity to ask do directly.
“What? Melody asked.
“You sound like you care.” The other girl whispered Melody immediately shot up.
“That’s because I do!” She exclaimed loudly as her eyes shined, they came to look into Emily’s. The other girl’s eyes widened fully in shock as she launched herself into Melody’s lap, tears streaming from her eyes.
“You’re not lying?” Her question was muffled by Melody’s shirt.
“I haven’t lied since we met, I’m not going to start now.” Melody replied dryly as she held Emily.
“You aren’t going to leave?” Emily whispered.
“Real friends stick together,” she hugged Emily tighter, “I won’t run, ever” Melody said as the room silenced, not even the sounds of the hospital outside its doors penetrating the silent comfort between the two friends.
